at sea. >> her first show here sold out fast. now a lot of beyonce fans have missed out on her second. >> you blinged, you missed it. first up today, get ready for a big chill. the mercury is about to do a nose-dive. >> veronica has our first word on the weather this afternoon. veronica? >> hey there, guys. we had temperatures in the 50s, even 60s throughout portion of our area. the story through the weekend is the dra many tick change. that, of course, means very low windchill readings that we're going to have to deal with. first, though, a bit of rain and even a bit of snow that we're going to see with two foust-moving systems. on the thrice and radar, you can see how the clouds have been increasing throughout our area. that is moisture you're seeing off to the west. having a bit of a tough time saturating the air right now, but there are a few showers falling not too far away. we will turn wet for the evening. you can see there's much more of

that back to the south and west coming through. in the form of snow. as i said, the temperatures, we're at 59 degrees, 64 degrees in culpepper, and just an hour away up in winchester, 43 the temperature, so big changes not too far away. for us it's light rain, and then all snow by midnight for even tomorrow morning. we could see a few flurries around the area. we'll have more on this weekend's dramatic change coming up. on the other side of the globe this morning, a wild sight of the ten-ton meteorite. it sent a powerful shockwave injuring hundreds of people. most of the injuries the result of broken glass from the blast. >> we're going to show you here. a city in the eural mountain range. >> reporter: astonishing pictures showing the meteorite

streaking across an early morning sky, the russian academy of sciences estimated its psych about ten tons, the speed 33,000 miles per hour. it was seen heard and felt on the ground as windows shattered, and the roof of a factory collapsed. all that damage thought to be caused by the sonic boom. >> these mahler meteorites which are observed, they happen hundreds of times every week, but only several times a year are they actually seen to fall by people, and very rarely do they do any damage. >> reporter: nearly 1,000 people have been injured, mostly hurt by flying glass. the meteor hit on the same day that an asteroid name 2012-da-14 makes the closest path to earth, closer than some satellites. the european space agency said the experience had determined there was no connection between the two, just cosmic coincidence.

duncan goal stanni, nbc news, london. tom sherwood caught up with the folks at the smithsonian to put all these cosmic events in perspective for us. the first lawsuits are being filed in connection with the nightmare cruise. passengers return home after five long days stranded. chris is live in mobile, alabama with the latest on their long journey to get home. chris? >> reporter: yeah, pat, for some of them after being adrift for more than four days just getting home from here in alabama was easier said than done. overjoyed passengers of the carnival cruiseship" triumph" thought their ordeal was done, but for? finding their way home has been just as unforgiving. one of the buses chartered to bring passengers to new orleans broke down. people didn't laugh about it.

this afternoon prosecutors say a woman jailed on a home burglary charge is likely to be

charged with killing the 4-year-old man who lived in the home she was the only person seen coming or going at the house during the time of the murder. elmer rohrs was found dead by his wife. he died from blunt force trauma. johnson was arrested in connection with a burglary at the home last notify. pat collins reports on the long-tim connection between the suspects and the victim. world that baltimore's police training will resume some operations next week, this after an accident shooting by a trainee. the victim is critically wounded from being shot in the head. he's in his 40s, but his name is not being released yet. william kernen is the instructor involved in the shooting. maryland and baltimore police are both conducting investigations. you better plan on major delays this weekend.

also, the virginia man charged with killing eight people at hi home in appomattox and firing on a police helicopter has pled guilty to three charges. he shared a house with his sister's family. he killed his speaker, her husband and two children and four friends there. and a new investigation into what's caused a massive power failure during the super bowl in new orleans. the power company for the super dome in new orleans have hired an outside expert. the power company believes it was caused by a relay device installed to prevent that kind of electrical problem. coming up, a popular we had -- it's banning sky land earns, because they're did a

and temperatures debt a chance to get cold enough, which is going to be very late. the window of opportunity for snow only about until 2:00 or 3:00 a.m. in the morning. rain to snow, mixing with that rain by 9:00, as temperatures head from 40 to 38 degrees. it's all light rain. we're at 59, so again, we have a long way to go. i think if there was any system that was going to give you some trouble or any travel issues at all, and i'm only talking about a slight chance, it's not going to be this one tonight or saturday morning. the snow chances to the north and west. we're talking about less than an inch here. areas into northern loudoun county, northern montgomery county, northwestern howard county, mainly rain here. any issues maybe with the second system. why? because a lot of cold air will be moving in this weekend.

he was distracted not even by the magistrate. it seemed at its most emotional when the prosecutors said the murder was premeditated. his father and brother attempted to comfort him, but he seemed undistracted. he was then led to the cells. he spoke to his agent this evening, saying that he refuted all the allegations and he expressed his sympathies toward reeva's family. >> if you believe in the lord, the truth will come out and we don't have to make any judgment. the judgment will be done then. >> reporter: he's spending the evening in custody and he'll appear before a court again for a bail hearing on turs morning. we now know the body is that of christopher dorner.

what we don't know yet is how he died. authorities denied the remains through a dental exam, and personal items including a driver's license also led them to figure it was him. it could take several mohr weeks before vars determined what killed him. dorner is the ex-l.a. police officers suspected in a shooting rampage. the nine-day man hunt ended with a gun fight at a mountain cabin that eventually went up in flame. rapper two chanz is calling out the police. he wrote -- locked me up and then wanted pictures. after stopping hi van for speeding in easton. he was on his way to a performance at the university of maryland eastern shore. state police say they're looking to the picture incident. police say a 12-year-old boy is facing multiple charges after stealing as suv off a rental car

lot. this surveillance footage captures the boy and 10-year-old friend near philly last friday. police say they both came into the business and took the keys to the mazda while pretending to wait. officers say they later came back to steal two more cars. a manager eventually caused the boys. that mazda was found parked across the street from the 10-year-old boy's house. ra a legal battle cook in the tworks between costco and tiffany. they're being accused of selling counterfeit tiffany engagement rings. tiffany says costco has been fooling customers into believing they were getting pricy tiffany engagement rings at a big discount when in fact the rings aren't even connected. costco had no immediate comment. can video games lead to violence? what researchers are saying about a controversial issue.

aleve gels and pills? liz is here. >> the first one comes from david and northwest. we turned aa mid-atlantic. they say the average price has gone up just in the last month. the national price average for a gallon of gas is 3.64. the average is 16 cents higher in the district. price jumps are due to an increase in demand for gas in the united states. that demand has driven up the cost of crude oil and price of gasoline has simply followed suit. another factor, a temporary refinery sit down and refinery closing in new jersey. no, you're not imagining it. it has happened. next question is from julia. she wants to know what's the difference between liquid gel capsules and traditional hard

pills. >> i called bayer for the question. they say there is no difference that the way the two products work. one does not work faster than the other. some people may want the ability to cut or crush a pill. you can do that obviously with one of the tab letts, while others find it easier to swallow gel caps alsos, but gel caps also do contain a trace amount of pork and beef products, so there may be dietary concerns. but i didn't know that answer. that was kind of cool. final question is from janet in fairfax station. she's heard that you shouldn't hand down child car safety seats, because they have an expiration date. they wants to know if that's true. >> gentlemen, janet, that is true. most manufacturers great that they should not be used after six years. that's because there's always new technology that can help

a pennsylvania student has lost her legal battle over a bad grade. it all began back in 2009 when megan thode was a graduate stay tuned at lehigh. she sued a school and teacher for $1.3 million, because she got a c-plus. she claimed the grade was in retaliation because she supports gale marriage. but late yesterday, a judge ruled against her, saying she failed to prove the university based that c-plus on anything other than academics. in the days following the terrible murders in newtown, connecticut last december, people who knew shooter adam lanza described him as obsessed with violent video games. is there a connection between violent behavior and violent games? chad oliver reports -- it depends on who you ask.

>> reporter: just don't mention the "p" word. >> scientists don't prove anything. >> reporter: the doctor is quick to point out limitations to the research. >> we can't say that individual, because we know he played violent video games, we can't say that caused that behavior. that's not the way science works. >> there's no silver bullet. >> reporter: psychologist chris ferguson sits on the task force for gun control. >> the studies have gone back and forth trying to answer that question. there's inconsistencies there. >> reporter: he says there are too many unknown variables among players and games that blur the question of do games cause violence? >> i think we need to ask questions rather than the content of the video game. >> how the game is placed is between trending single-player shooters. >> the academy encouraging games involves two players, warning too much time absorbed in violent fantasy may foster

social isolation. >> reporter: while science studies group patterns, individual action is unpredictable, while there's one thing researchers agree on. >> any human behavior, whether it's helping someone across the street or engaging in a school shooting, there's no one cause for any human behavior. >> reporter: even in the hemmer house where violent games are banned. >> not in my house, i don't let them play that here. >> reporter: mom doesn't blame violent on video games. >> if there's already a problem, i think it can exacerbate that problem, but i don't think it causes that problem. president obama's plan for reducing gun violence calls for funding for federal research on the relationship. we may see in flakes this weekend. all of us will feel cold. >> it will del charges east, really coming in. the question is how quickly will

just flurrying that will be around the area. this fist wave should be ending about 2:00 a.m. to 3:00 a.m. tomorrow morning, then just flurries, we will be cold enough i think by tomorrow morning. so with the first wave, the best chance of picking up that snow will be hear. areas to our north, around middleburg, down toward washington in virginia, that's our best chance to see make less than an inch with mostly rain in d.c. at we moved to, not tomorrow for high temperatures, but as we move to the next map, there's the next best chance of snow. in between these areas around d.c., manassas, may not get anything but just a few flakes. next accept less than an inch around quantico, around la plata, around waldorf, maybe more in lexington part, if this system is 15, 20 miles farther

to the south, they may not see anything at all. for sunday, cold and windy, with windchills in the teens to 20s. by the beginning of next week, we're back up. 51 on tuesday, small chance of rain, into the 40s for the remainder of the week, so there's a look at your weekend. jim? pat? >> thanks, veronica. tonight the airlines are looking for ways to make a few bucks from you after you buy your ticket. the next time you fly out, expect to hear a pitch like the phone companies have been using for years. chris clackum reports it's all about convincing you a bargain is involved. >> reporter: maybe the offer will come at the ticket counter or maybe online, but expect the new sales pitch from the airlines, because here's a fact worth repeating about the industry. airlines are not very profitable, so they're looking for as many different ways as possible to get you to fork out as much cash, even after you buy

your ticket. >> reporter: the newest way to get you to fork over more cash is by bundling. putting fees together in a bundled package and off them at a discount. for example, delta's bundle includes priority boarding, plus 24-hour access to wifi for $42, a bit cheaper than if you bought them separately. american's bundle has priority boarding, a free checked bag, and a waiver of the dreaded change fee, all for $68 round trip. let than half what you pay for just a ticket change. >> i think that's a good bet. someone who changes their ticket a lot, i'm changing that $150 each time. >> founder of the website of pointsguy, and an expert on air travel, who says it's all about what to know before you go. >> it's really just about knowing what fees are out there and figuring out how to get
